Antibody blood tests, also called serologic tests, check for the presence of antibodies to coronavirus in the blood. We use this test to detect a past infection. If you are exposed to a coronavirus, your immune system will respond by producing immunoglobulins (IgM and IgG) to fight the infection. The level of IgM antibody begins to rise 1 week after the initial infection, while the rise in IgG usually appears after 14 days. Elevated IgG levels can last for 6 months or even several years. By testing for the presence of these antibodies, we are able to determine if a patient was previously infected by the coronavirus. The test does not diagnose an active infection, nor does it identify if you are protected from reinfection. At this time, it is unclear if the presence of antibodies indicates immunity.

If you have not experienced symptoms of COVID-19 in at least 14 days, you may be eligible for an antibody test. The COVID-19 antibody test is a simple blood draw. We then send the sample to a lab, and will have results within a few days. Reserve a spot at the MEDIQ clinic nearest you!
