Cold Treatment

Dealing with a cold can be very annoying. Everybody’s had them – and unfortunately, there is no cure. If you’ve caught a cold, then the only treatment options are to lessen the symptoms and to help fight off the virus as quickly as possible.

If you do not have a primary care doctor or aren’t able to schedule an appointment at a time that’s convenient for you, head to Mediq Urgent Care. You can walk into the clinic nearest you, no appointment necessary.

Causes and Symptoms of the Common Cold

There are a number of viruses that cause the symptoms that associated with theĀ cold, the most common being the Rhinovirus, the Coronavirus and RSV and parainfluenza. Some cold viruses can lead to more severe infections such as pneumonia. Although these viruses have been identified as causing what we know to be the common cold, roughly 20 to 30 percent of the causes of adult colds are unidentified.

When it comes to symptoms, almost all colds begin with a sore throat. Additional symptoms that you may feel as the cold progresses include a runny nose, regular sneezing, fatigue and a cough. Colds do not cause fever. If you have the symptoms of a cold but are also suffering from a fever, you most likely have an infection or the flu.

Common Cold Treatment

At MEDIQ Urgent Care, we can determine whether you are actually suffering from a cold. While we may not be able to identify the actual cause, we can rule out things like the flu or other infections, as well as determine whether you have a cold or if you’re simply suffering from allergies.

Even though a cold will usually resolve itself, it’s still a good idea to come into our clinic if you’ve caught one. We will make sure that it is just a cold and not a more serious health problem. It’s also important that you see a health professional if:

  • You get a cold while you are pregnant
  • You get a cold while you are breastfeeding
  • Your newborn or infant gets a cold
  • Your cold gets worse after having symptoms for three days

Once we’ve diagnosed your cold, we will suggest a treatment plan to help you lessen your symptoms and fight off the virus as soon as possible. In some cases, we may suggest certain over-the-counter medications to help relieve your symptoms if they are particularly bothersome.
