Dehydration Treatment

MEDIQ Urgent Care offers fast, affordable dehydration treatment.

Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in. Slight dehydration is somewhat common. For example, if you were to go for a run without drinking any water, the amount of sweat that your body loses and the lack of water you’ve taken in can cause dehydration. While this can be easily remedied by simply drinking more water and rehydrating, severe dehydration can be much more dangerous and may require medical attention.

If you or someone with you has experienced severe dehydration, you may want to visit a medical professional. Because severe dehydration requires immediate medical attention, you probably won’t have time to schedule an appointment with your primary physician if you have one. However, you can walk in to our MEDIQ Urgent Care in Archdale, Greensboro or Winston-Salem without an appointment in order to receive emergency dehydration treatment.

What is dehydration and what are the symptoms?

The body needs fluids in order to perform its normal functions. If your body is losing more fluids than it is gaining, it won’t be able to perform certain functions, leading to dehydration. Older adults tend to have a lower volume of water in their bodies, which can lead to dehydration if they don’t regularly hydrate (drink liquids). They may also have certain conditions or take certain medications that increase the risk of dehydration. The most common cause of dehydration in children is vomiting and severe diarrhea.

Symptoms caused by dehydration differ slightly between children and adults. Children and infants may experience a dry mouth and tongue, a lack of wet diapers after three hours, sunken eyes and cheeks, irritability, a lack of tears when crying and a sunken soft spot on top of their skull. Adults will often experience extreme thirst, less regular urination than normal, dark-colored urine, dizziness, confusion and fatigue.

Although dehydration can often be caused because the individual needs to drink more fluids, it can also be caused by vomiting, diarrhea, fever, excessive sweating and increased urination. Most of the time, simply drinking water in order to rehydrate (thereby replacing the lost fluids in your body) will eliminate these symptoms.

Seeking dehydration treatment

Severe dehydration may result in symptoms such as bloody or black stool, the inability to keep down liquids, disorientation, 24-hour diarrhea and severe irritability and fatigue.

In some cases, you may seek medical attention because of the symptoms without realizing that dehydration is the cause. A doctor will be able to diagnose the issue as dehydration based on physical signs and symptoms. Blood tests and urinalysis can confirm the diagnosis.

In less severe cases, the doctor will simply provide some recommendations for rehydrating and ask about lifestyle choices that may be leading to dehydration. In severe cases, the doctor may introduce salts and fluids to your body intravenously for a quicker recovery.
